Is a full service history important..?

When searching for a used car the term FSH or Full Service History is always used on forecourts and in classified ads as a beneficial selling point and with good reason. Before buying a used car alsways ask to see a car's service book and check the service centre has stamped the book appropriately to the mileage on the car.

A FSH doesn't tell you how the car has been driven, however it does mean that the vehicle has been serviced on time and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.  The current owner has taken the time to keep the car properly serviced and therefore it's a good clue that it will prove to be reliable.

How much do you want to spend on a used car?

• How much is your current car worth, will you sell it privately or part-exchange it with a car dealer?
• Do you need to take out car finance?
• How much will your fuel, insurance and road tax costs be after buying your car?

Choose the car that is best for you

• What will the car be used for?
• How many passengers will you be carrying and is the boot large enough?
• Estimate the costs for petrol, tax, insurance, servicing and repairs.

Preparing your car for sale or trade in

Making your car look more attractive to potential buyers or dealers is an important part in the buying and selling process, it also sends out a clear message that the car has been looked after making it more desirable.

Don't just clean your car

The first and most obvious place to start is to clean it and vacuum the interior, but it doesn't stop there, the objective is to achieve that showroom look that all dealers use to attract us onto the their forecourts. There are plenty of professional style cleaning products on the market that will help you breathe life into the paintwork, wheels, tyres, plastic trims and interior upholstery. Faded plastics can be one of the worst offenders when it comes to making a car look tired, so pay particular attention to these both inside and out.

How's your bodywork?

Having small dents and scratches removed professionally is only worth doing if your car is nearly new. Most private buyers will understand that these small imperfections are all part of part of buying a secondhand car and expected on older vehicles. Dealers will use a checklist system to assess the damage and it's simple and cheap for dealers to have small repairs done in their own bodyshop, so you are unlikely to recover any money spent on bodywork repairs.
